Welcome to the Petola Visitor Centre in Kuhmo

Kuhmo Visitor Centre Petola is home to Finland's large carnivores and offers a window on the Kainuu wilderness. Here you can obtain information on the brown bear, the wolf, the lynx and the wolverine. There is also plenty of information on wild forest reindeer. At Petola, you can buy unique souvenirs and get the best tips for hikes in the wilderness of Kainuu.

Opening hours during the summer time:

  • 1.6. - 12.6. Mon-Fri 9-16
  • 15.6. - 7.8. every day 9-17
  • 10.8. - 15.10. Mon-Fri 9-16

Free entrance. Guided tours are charged.

Petola is home to Finland's large carnivores

Location: In Kuhmo (kuhmo.fi, in Finnish), the Kainuu Region. Read more.

Arrival: By car. Read more.

Visit: Open from the beginning of May to the end of October. At other times by agreement. There is no entrance fee to the visitor centre. Guided group tours cost 50€/group/hour and they must be booked in advance. Read more.

Things to Do and See: The Predators on the Prowl exhibition, events, short nature films, the Petola Nature Trail, guided group tours. Read more.

Suitability: An excellent location for families with children. Also suitable for the disabled. It is not allowed to bring pets in the visitor centre.

Services: large carnivore -themed products, fishing and hunting permits, licences for the snowmobile routes maintained by Metsähallitus, meeting services, nature education, WLAN. Café services for groups when booked in advance. Read more.
