Iivaara-Jousivaara nature reserve in southern Kuusamo consists of two hilly sections, Iivaara-Penikkavaara hill and Laihanvaara-Jousivaara hill, and adjacent herb-rich forest and mire reserves. Virmajoki flood meadow is a significant traditional landscape site adjoining the Laihanvaara area. The core of the Iivaara area consists of valuable old forests that represent the northern hill and fell country at its best.

Iivaara was long considered a hunting and fishing destination, but has recently started to attract daytrippers also, because of the hiking route passing through the area. A short nature excursion is an excellent way to get a feel for this wilderness destination. The hill forests are rich in decaying wood, making it popular with bird enthusiasts.
