What can one do in Tuntsa Wilderness Area?

Walk on Marked Trails

The national hiking route, UKK Hiking Trail passes through the wilderness area.

Go Wilderness Trekking

Hikers can trek for several days in one go along the UKK Hiking Trail. Hikers can trek all the way to Nuortti Hiking Trail by following the UKK Hiking Trail.

Ski Cross-country off Trails

The Tuntsa area is for those who are experienced in winter trekking and want to experience something demanding. There are no maintained skiing trails in the area.

Go Fishing

Fishing is permitted in the area if you have a Metsähallitus' recreational fishing licence (eraluvat.fi). For the head waters of the River Värriöjoki an Yli-Kemi recreational fishing licence is also valid. Fishing permits can be bought from Metsähallitus netstore (eräluvat.fi), at Korvatunturi Visitor Centre and by local tourist enterprises (salla.fi, savukoski.fi).

Fishers need to check the restrictions on fishing sites at kalastusrajoitus.fi (In Finnish).


Go Hunting

Hunting is permitted in the area for those who purchase a Naruska - Tuntsa 3611 hunting permit. Permits can be bought from Metsähallitus netstore (eräluvat.fi).

Go Berry and Mushroom Picking

The area's bogs have abundant cloudberry crops and the slopes of hills are filled with blueberries and lingonberries.

Go Swimming

Swimming is permitted in the area, but there are no actual swimming spots.
