Cross-country ski tracks and multi-use track

One can reach the highest point of the national park, Pookivaara, in both traditional and free skiing style. Be aware that there are some demanding downhills and steep climbs along the tracks. There is also a multi-use track in the Rokua area for all types of activities using muscle power such as snowshoeing, fatbiking, walking, skiing with dogs or walking.

The locations, descriptions and instructions for the ski and multi-use track are presented on the Rokua ski map (pdf-file, rokuageopark.fi).

If any comments on winter tracks send feedback: rokuanladut(a)utajarvi.fi.

Rokua winter trail

Rokua winter trail will not be maintained during winter 2023-2024.

In winter 2022–2023, Metsähallitus maintains the Rokua winter trail from the Pookivaara parking area to the top of Pookivaara and all the way to the Pitkäjärvi parking area. The length of the trail is about 3.5 kilometres from end to end. The maintenance of the route was started in 2022. The trail markings are orange snow stakes. The road to Pookivaara and Pitkäjärvi parking areas will also be ploughed during the winter. The ploughing of the road leading to the Pookivaara parking area is the responsibility of Metsähallitus, and the ploughing of the road leading to the Pitkäjärvi parking area is done by the municipality of Vaala.

When planning your visit, note that there may be snow on the roads leading to parking areas and on the winter trail despite ploughing and stomping, as remote sites are cleared on delay.

Two skiers are having a break on the stairs of the Palovartija wilderness hut in the middle of a snowy forest.
