Kuusisto Bishop's Castle Ruins

Ruined castle in front, some water, buildings and forest in the background.

The high-ranking clergymen's grand castle in Kuusisto was a showcase of everyday luxury in the age in question, featuring modern conveniences from abroad. In the Middle Ages, the bishop's palace was not only the centre of spiritual life in Catholic Finland, but also the focal point of political power. The castle's story came to an end when King Gustav Vasa ordered the bishop's residence to be demolished after the Reformation. Ruins were all that remained of former glories.

Suitability: Ideal for families, visitors arriving by water and culture enthusiasts.

The destination is managed by Metsähallitus, Parks & Wildlife Finland.
