Kajaani Castle Ruins

A castle ruin on a small island photographed from above. There is a road leading across the river and the castle.

In the centre of Kajaani, in the park along the river, you will find the northernmost stone castle in the world. It was built in the 17th century on the eastern border region of the kingdom in a remote wilderness. Hear the calls of swans living on the Linnanvirta and the stories still told about the persistence of the people who lived in the wilderness castle centuries ago, defying cold, hunger and enemy besiegers. The castle ruins and their surroundings take you back in time, while at the same time you can enjoy the pulse of the town centre.
