Sights and Activities in the Svartholma Sea Fortress

Enjoy history, the sea and summer in Svartholma:

  • The Svartholma Sea Fortress was built in the mid-1700s as a sister fortress to Suomenlinna and the southeastern stronghold to secure the eastern border of the Kingdom of Sweden. The sea fortress's ruins on a small island at the opening of Degerbynlahti bay bear witness to how the realm was defended in the old days. The fortress was conquered by Russians during the Finnish War in 1808 and blown up by the English navy during the Crimean War in 1855. Read more about the history of the Svartholma Sea Fortress
  • The exhibition The island of soldiers, prisoners and tourists is about the history, construction phases and daily life of the Svartholma fortress island during the Swedish and Russian reign. Free admission!
  • Guided walks are an excellent way to familiarise oneself with the history of the sea fortress. Guided walks are organised in Finnish, Swedish and English.
  • Children's adventure tour is an exciting adventure walk that introduces the secrets and mysteries of Svartholma. Children will experience how the fortress was built a long time ago. The tour is intended for primary school children (recommended age 5–12), who must be accompanied by an adult at all times during the tour.
  • Sea views and ruins can be admired during a picnic. You can also fry a sausage or enjoy another type of snack at one of the campfire sites on the island.

For the schedules and prices of guided walks and adventure tours, see the city of Loviisa's website (www.visitloviisa.fi).
