Liminganlahti Nature Centre is closed 1.1.-4.2.2022. The Finnish Nature Centre Haltia is closed 10.1.–1.2.2022. Koli Nature Centre Ukko is closed 1.1.–26.1.2022. Kuusamo Customer Service Karhuntassu is closed 13.1.–31.1.2022.

In other nature centers in Finland, we require the use of a facial mask and keeping the 2 meter distance to other visitors. In addition, there may be requirements to show the Covid pass, and/or the number of visitors can be limited. More information Nature centers. The length of the restrictions depends on the region. The Salamajärvi National Park is located east of the Äänekoski-Kokkola road (Highway 13) in the municipalities of Perho, Kinnula and Kivijärvi. It is 20-25 km from the municipalities to the Koirasalmi Nature Information Hut. It is 130 km from Kokkola, 140 km from Seinäjoki and 140 km from Jyväskylä to Salamajärvi.

To the Hiking Trails

Starting points for the hiking trails are at the Koirasalmi Nature Information Hut, Sysilampi parking area and Risuperä parking area. The easiest starting point is from the Koirasalmi Nature Information Hut. It is also possible to start the Peura trail at the Humalajoki River (Perho) in the southern part of the national park or from the Petäjämäki outdoor recreational centre (Reisjärvi) in the north. By Car to Salamajärvi

Koirasalmi parking areas, Koirasalmentie 1220, Kivijärvi. Please note! Not all navigators recognise this address. Space for approximately 50-60 cars. Parking areas are maintained during the winter, but there is less room for parking. 

Huttukangas parking area, Koirasalmentie, Kivijärvi. Space for approximately 10 cars. The parking area is maintained during the winter, but there is less room for parking.

Risuperä parking area, Perhontie (road no. 6520), Kivijärvi. Space for approximately 4 cars. No winter maintenance.

Sysilampi parking area, Sysilammentie 771, Perho. Space for approximately 10 cars. Occasionally ploughed in the winter - check with the Koirasalmi Nature Information Hut for the ploughing status.

Erijärvi parking area, Salamajärventie, Perho (road no. 7520). Space for approximately 4 cars. The parking area is ploughed in winter.

Pikku Peura parking area, Kinnulantie 695, Lestijärvi. Space for approximately 20 cars. No winter maintenance.

The parking areas do not have more detailed address information.

By Bus to Salamajärvi

  • Buses (matkahuolto.fi) run between Jyväskylä and Kokkola. The nearest stop to the national park is Möttönen, Perho on main road 13 P/E (North/South buses). From the stop it is 7 km to the Humalajoki River, 15 km to Risuperä and 21 km to Koirasalmi. Visitors can also get off the bus at Perho (Perho MH) and, when coming from Jyväskylä, in Kivijärvi (Kivijärvi MH). 
  • From Perho and Kinnula (road no. 7520), you can reach the village of Salamajärvi by bus (matkahuolto.fi) on weekdays during the school year. Visitors can get off the bus at the point where the Hirvaan kierros trail crosses road no.7520 between Perho and Kinnula. The stops have no names.
