The hut is located approximately 12 km from Kilpisjärvi, approximately 600 m from the Norwegian border at the western end of Lake Saarijärvi. The reservable hut serves as a good one-night hiking destination for those who want to enjoy the atmosphere of the Kalottireitti Trail, but are not able to hike for a whole week.

Reservable huts are meant for those travelling by foot, skis or other means of physical movement (not motorized vehicles). These huts may be used for 1 to 2 days by those who have reserved a bed in advance. Commercial use (i.e. guided hikes and tours etc.) of reservable huts is only allowed with special permission from Metsähallitus.

Saarijärvi Reservable Wilderness Hut will be out of use due to renovation from 8 August to 15 August 2021. 

Please note that due to the corona situation, the number of beds in the hut has been halved, but the reduction will not appear in the booking calendar! If the hut is empty, more than half of the beds can be reserved for one group. Beds are reserved according to the number of people in the group.

The wilderness hut is situated by Nordkalott Trail near the Norwegian border. It is to the north of the Salmivaara Fell at the west end of Lake Saarijärvi.

Price and Keys

16,50 € / night / person (incl. VAT 10%).

Keys for the hut can be picked up from the Kilpisjärvi Visitor Centre and when the visitor centre is closed from the customs station of Kilpisjärvi, tel. int +358 295 527 007 (open 24 hours).

Facilities

A stove and a gas cooker. Basic cookware (pot, frying pan, coffee pot). Bunk beds with mattresses, pillows and blankets. Please note that it takes some time before the hut is properly warm.

Notices

Pets are not permitted in the hut.

The building also houses an open wilderness hut for 10 persons.

Visitors must come prepared with warm clothing, food, drink, maps, compass, orienteering skills and matches. Fog or storms can form in just a few hours. Take also your own toilet paper.

Firewood should only be used for heating the cabin, not for outdoor fires.

Waste Management

Metsähallitus follows the principles of litter-free hiking. Visitors are adviced to bring their own waste out of the area. Recycling points can be found at Yllästunturi, Pallastunturi and Fell Lapland Visitor Centre. Read more about Hiking without Littering.
