Directions to Päijänne

During a forest fire warning (ilmatieteenlaitos.fi), fire is only allowed at covered campfire sites that have a flue or in fireplaces at huts, but only with extreme caution. The one who lights the fire is always responsible for its safety. Making a fire at campfire sites can be banned locally.

Päijänne National Park is located in the southern part of Lake Päijänne. Most of its islands are situated in front of the municipality of Padasjoki. Pulkkilanharju Ridge, which consists of esker islands, is part of the municipality of Asikkala. In addition, there are islands in the eastern part of South Päijänne, for example a part of the island of Päijätsalo in the municipality of Sysmä, which belong to the National Park area.

To the Hiking Trails

The hiking trails start at the Karisalmi and Päijätsalo parking areas, Padasjoki harbour, Vääksy harbour and Lehmonkärki. Starting points for the hiking trails.

By Bus to Päijänne

Bus timetables: Matkahuolto (matkahuolto.fi).

Many express coaches running on the road 24 (Lahti - Padasjoki - Jämsä) stop daily at Padasjoki ABC petrol station. It is 3.5 km from the petrol station to Padasjoki Guest Harbour.

The local bus (Lahti-Padasjoki) stops at Padasjoki coach station. From the coach station in the centre of Padasjoki, it is 2 km to Padasjoki Guest Harbour.

The local bus (Lahti-Sysmä) stops at Pulkkilanharju in the municipality of Asikkala. There are several bus stops at Pulkkilanharju.

By Car to Päijänne

Please note that most of the Päijänne National Park is only accessible by water.

Karisalmi parking area, Pulkkilantie 95, Vääksy (road no. 314). Space for approximately 35 cars. During snowy winter months, the parking area is smaller.

Päijätsalo parking area, Sorolantie 28, Sysmä. Space for approximately 7 cars.

By Boat and Paddlecraft to Päijänne

The national park consists mainly of islands and islets which can only be reached by boat. 

It is easy to access the area with your own boat. Read more about services for boaters.

Canoes and kayaks are rented out by partner operators.

Water taxi services in the national park are provided by partner operators.

Cruise ship M/S Jenni-Maria III offers regularly scheduled service (kulkeevettenhalki.fi, in Finnish) from Padasjoki harbour and Karisalmi to Kelvenne, Päijänne National Park.
