When forest and grass fire warnings (en.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi) are in effect, fire is only allowed at covered campfire sites that have a flue. A fire can be also lit in fireplaces at wilderness and other huts. Always use extreme caution when handling fire. The one who lights a fire is always responsible for its safe use. Please note, that making fire at these campfire sites can be banned locally.
Hunters and fishers are expected to observe the new Outdoor etiquette in Metsähallitus fishing waters and hunting areas in the future. The Outdoor etiquette emphasises respect for the catch or game, nature, and other people enjoying nature. Approximately 200,000 hunting and fishing permits are purchased for state-owned areas each year.
The Outdoor etiquette for fishers and hunters is a continuation of the Outdoor etiquette that is observed when hiking in state-owned areas. In addition, the Outdoor etiquette for fishers and hunters takes into account the special characteristics of fishing and hunting, such as respect for the catch and game and making fires in different areas.
“The popularity of fishing and hunting is continuing to increase. As a result, it is even more important for hunters and fishers to respect other enthusiasts, other people enjoying the outdoors, and catches or game,” says Communications Manager Aku Ahlholm from Metsähallitus.
For example, littering is a constant problem in the wilderness. Fishers leave line and hunters leave empty shells in the terrain. Metsähallitus often receives feedback about the use of hunting dogs in areas where reindeer herding takes place.
Hunters and fishermen naturally have to comply with legislation, catch quotas and other permit terms. In addition to these, the Outdoor etiquette for fishers and hunters encourages people to utilise good practices in order to ensure responsible and sustainable wilderness activities.
The Outdoor etiquette was compiled with special consideration to state-owned areas. Hunting and fishing organisations and the Finnish Wildlife Agency also have excellent guidelines for responsible activities, and everyone should familiarise themselves with these instructions.
