What can one do in Ilmakkiaapa?

Walk on Marked Trails

  • In Ilmakkiaapa, you can walk along the duckboard trail and explore the aapa mire landscape of Northern Finland. The trail is approximately 400 metres long and leads to the bird-watching tower by Lake Ilmakkijärvi.

Go Bird Watching

  • Ilmakkiaapa is a well-known bird-spotting place. The birdlife of the mire includes, for example, Arctic waterfowl, the whooper swan (Cygnus cygnus), broad-billed sandpiper (Limicola falcinellus), red-necked phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) and little gull (Larus minutus). The best time for bird observation is from the end of May to July.

Ski Cross-country off Trails

  • There are no ski trails in the area but it is possible to ski in the spring when the snow is hard enough to support you.

Go Berry and Mushroom Picking

  • Berry and mushroom picking are allowed in the area. The fenberries growing here include cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) and cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos).
