The improved information about snowmobile routes and tracks on maps in the Excursionmap.fi map service provided by Metsähallitus offers snowmobilers the opportunity to plan their trips to nature across municipal and regional borders even more easily. Metsähallitus has previously provided information about snowmobile networks on the Excursion Map mainly for areas where there are large state-owned land areas. Local authorities and associations can now display their snowmobile tracks and routes in the Excursionmap.fi map service free of charge and easily through the Lipas web application.
Snowmobiling differs from many other forms of exercise in nature through the distances covered as the excursions often extend over large areas across the municipal and regional borders. It would be easier for snowmobilers to plan their trips if up-to-date national maps had links to additional information about different tracks and routes. These challenges have been responded to through collaboration by creating better conditions for publishing information on maps at Excursionmap.fi.
Local authorities, associations, federations and clubs have already been able to download their open-air exercise sites to the national Excursionmap.fi map service free of charge through the Lipas system. Now the collaboration was extended to also cover the snowmobile tracks and routes of local authorities and associations. Local authorities and associations can also attach additional information to the track or route displayed on the map. The information is updated to the Excursion Map from the Lipas application once in 24 hours. This way, matters such as temporary changes to the tracks can easily be communicated.
The Excursion Map provides excellent visibility on the map for the snowmobile tracks and routes of local authorities and associations. Snowmobilers are familiar with the use of the easy Excursionmap.fi service, which has already displayed thousands of kilometres of snowmobile networks before.
The Excursion Map service is provided by Metsähallitus. In 2016, the service was already used 3.6 million times. Lipas, the Liikuntapaikat.fi system, is free of charge and is used in all municipalities. The Lipas system is managed by the Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences of the University of Jyväskylä and funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture. Open-air exercise sites, including snowmobile tracks and routes, are downloaded to the Lipas application in the municipalities. Local authorities and associations do not need to pay anything for the information they display in the Excursion Map service.
