Northern Lapland Region
The state lands in the area are managed by Metsähallitus. The recreational service facilities located on private property are managed by Utsjoki Municipality.
The area surrounding Utsjoki parish village in northernmost Finland is breath takingly beautiful. The rugged landscape is dominated by two large rivers and their surrounding fells. The River Utsjoki, which flows through a steep-edged valley, broadens out from time-to-time into a line of small lakes and finally empties into the River Tenojoki at the village. The River Tenojoki's tumultuous clear waters capture the attention of visitors and calls them to go fishing. On each side of the parish village lie the ruggedly beautiful Kaldoaivi and Paistunturi wilderness areas.
The Utsjoki area is ideal for fishing and hiking enthusiasts. The River Tenojoki is one of Europe's best salmon rivers and the area's other rivers are also known for their plentiful fishing grounds. Hikers can enjoy the area's nature in a variety of ways. There are shorter routes in the Utsjoki area for day-trips and it is an excellent starting point for longer treks into the wilderness.
