What can one do in Pääjärvi?

There are two marked trails with different lengthi n Pääjärvi Recreation Area. The trails are quite easy to travel, but there are some changes in altitude.

Go Wilderness Trekking

The trails in Pääjärvi Recreation Area are part of the 200 km long Ilvesreitti Trail Network (www.hameenvirkistys alueyhdistys.fi, in Finnish). Hikers can stay overnight along the Ilvesreitti Trails in tents, lean-to shelters, Lappish huts and paid accommodation.

Go Cycling

The area is located by the Häme Härkätie Road national cycling route. The historic and quiet Härkätie Road is ideal for cycling. For further information on cycling routes see the Häme Lake Uplands outdoor map (www.hameenvirkistysalueyhdistys.fi, in Finnish).

Go Berry and Mushroom Picking

Pääjärvi Recreation Area is suitable for picking berries and mushrooms. Blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) are abundant in the area and there is also a fair lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) crop.

Go Swimming

There are no official beaches in the area, but the shoreline is sandy and suitable for swimming especially near resting spots.

Go Fishing

Hook-and-line fishing and ice fishing is permitted at Lake Pääjärvi under Everyman's Rights (www.environment.fi). Lure fishing is permitted with fisheries management permit (www.eräluvat.fi). Fisheries management permits may also be purchased on the Metsähallitus Eräluvat web shop (verkkokauppa.eraluvat.fi). Fishers need to check the restrictions on fishing sites at kalastusrajoitus.fi (In Finnish).
