Hikers visiting Pääjärvi Recreation Area can experience the peace of nature as there is very little habition in the surrounding area. Pääjärvi is a serene day-trip destination, which is well-suited for families with children. The area's diverse nature and varied landscape offer an opportunity to experience nature in many forms. Additionally the area's clearly marked trails and numerous resting spots make travelling through the terrain easy. Those wanting to set off on a longer hiker can continue onto the Häme Ilvesreitti Trail Network.
The recreation area is part of a larger ridge area which covers 70 hectares and has over 4 km of sandy natural beaches and magnificent ridgebacks. Trails meander up and down the ridge sides, but are considerably easy to travel even though there are changes in altitude. Along a longer route the landscape changes from pine forest, to birch and onto dense spruce forest and along almost the entire route the blue lake back shimmers between the trees. There are also small forest lakes and mires which peak out from the shelter of the forest.
An observant visitor will spot water numerous birds such as the Crane (Grus grus) and the Red-Throated Diver (Gavia stellata). If lucky one can spot one of the rare and timid Flying Squirrels (Pteromys volans) which live at Kynnysniemi.
