Oulu, Northern Ostrobothnia
Utajärvi (www.utajarvi.fi, in Finnish)
Area: 8 ha, part of the Natura 2000 network (2002)
The area is managed by Metsähallitus.
The Kurimonkoski rapids on Kiiminkijoki River are one of the best-known fishing sites in the Oulu region, and are also of great cultural historic interest. The roaring rapids provide an excellent setting for a picnic.
In the 19th century, Kurimo ironworks operated on the banks of the rapids. After their closure, the area's meadows were farmed to provide feed for local cattle. Nowadays the meadows are mowed to imitate old land use practices to maintain the traditional landscape of Kurimo. The site is part of the regionally valuable Särkijärvi landscape conservation area in Utajärvi.
