Services in the Vicinity of the Kärnäkoski Fortress

  • The campfire site and lean-to-shelter are situated by the shore in the barge harbour, a 0.5 kilometre walk from the Fortress parking area. You are welcome to cook your own meal and enjoy a day out in a glorious landscape by a clear lake! Before lighting a fire, please remember to check with the Finnish Meteorological Institute online weather service (www.ilmatieteenlaitos.fi) or listen to the weather forecast on the radio in case a forest fire warning is in force for the area.
  • Information board provides information on the history of the Fortress and guidance for visitors.
  • The dry toilet is located by the Kärnäkoski Mill next to the parking area. The dry toilet is accessible.
  • Guided tours of the fortress are available by order. Please contact the Partakoski Village Association (www.partakoskenkylat.fi, in Finnish).
  • Saimaan palju (www.saimaanpalju.fi) offers guided tours of the fortress and outdoor catering services

Services for the Disabled

  • The Fortress grounds are fairly easy and the centre of the Main Fortress is accessible by wheelchair, when assisted, and for prams and pushchairs. The route to the shore, lookout point and sides of the Fortress are not accessible as the paths are narrow and difficult to navigate – they have been made by the sheep grazing here.
  • The trail from the Fortress to the barge harbour is accessible by wheelchair when assisted. It is fairly even but small tree roots may protrude on the path.
  • The stairs to the Mountain Fort by the barge harbour are inaccessible to disabled visitors.
  • The site is equipped with a toilet for the disabled (an accessible dry toilet).
