Area 1,7 km², established in 1956.
The area is managed by Metsähallitus.

Hepoköngäs Nature Reserve was established in the area surrounding one of the Finland's highest natural waterfall, Hepoköngäs. Located in the magnificent Kainuu hill landscape the waterfall is a popular sight, which is also accessible for disabled.

The river valley is lush and the gorge rugged. Half of the nature reserve is covered by spruce dominated old-growth forest in the shelter of which numerous threatened and rare species thrive.
